About the hall

PLEASE NOTE the following:

For the academic year 22/23 we have had to change the use of Uttley House. Previously designated an "all-undergraduate" hall it will for the next year be a mixed use hall with a different demographic. We propose to have two areas occupied by Postgraduate students (some on 51 week agreements and some on 41 week agreements. Postgraduates will make up approximately 50% of the hall population. The other 50%, in two other areas of the hall, will be undergraduate students who have requested a quieter hall environment - the sort we designate 'Lifestyle Moderated' ... by which we mean:

We have considered the provision of areas within Halls that can offer an alternative lifestyle to what might be considered the usual Undergraduate experience in a UK Institution. Students living in this area would have requested and be expected to adopt a moderated lifestyle in respect of alcohol, parties and noise etc. We do not envisage being able to guarantee a permanently quiet or alcohol free environment but by grouping like minded people together it is hoped we can at least provide a 'space' where a moderated lifestyle might flourish.

As one resident wrote: "I'd like to say thanks to you guys for pointing me towards a Lifestyle Moderated Area when I asked for this last year. It's been quite a peaceful experience here which helps my anxiety issues and has led me to consider staying, spaces permitting and the rest!"

If you are interested in this accommodation please email the Accommodation Office (the address is below) and put 'LIFESTYLE MODERATED' in the subject line of your email.

Named after Alison Uttley, author and alumni of the University of Manchester, who was only the second woman to graduate with honours in physics at the University in 1906, Uttley House opened in September 2022 after a refurbishment programme converting the building into student accommodation. Uttley House had its beginnings in 1850 having been built for Sir Joseph Whitworth and today parts of the hall are grade 2 listed. In 1882 the property was leased to C.P Scott who left the house to the University and for some time it was the home of the Vice Chancellor. The house was later converted to Chancellors Hotel (please note than when searching for Uttley House on Google Maps the building may still appear listed as Chancellors Hotel).

Consisting of 62 en-suite bedrooms the hall is set in beautiful gardens and offers internal study space areas, common room and laundry facilities. It is a self-catered hall.
