Physical health support

If you’re uncertain about what to do or require urgent medical advice and your GP is closed, call the NHS medical helpline on 111.

Emergencies

In a medical emergency, dial 999, but only if you or somebody else is seriously unwell. Then contact the University Campus Support and Security team (if you’re in University-owned halls) as they may need to lift barriers to allow vehicle access. They'll also guide medical emergency crews to you – and as accredited first aiders – may be able to assist before the ambulance arrives.

If you’re going to a hospital yourself, the nearest accident and emergency unit is at Manchester Royal Infirmary on Grafton Street, close to Brook Hall and Whitworth Park accommodation. There is also a walk-in centre for less urgent care.

Don’t forget to report accidents to your hall’s reception or the ResLife Team.

GPs and general advice

Make sure you’re registered with a GP so you can easily arrange an appointment with a doctor if you ever feel ill.

During Welcome Week, there'll be the opportunity for you to register in halls or on campus. You can also register directly with a clinic. If you're not sure what to do, ask your ResLife Advisor, who'll be happy to help.

You can register with a dentist privately or through the NHS. You can also get a free eye test at the University Teaching Clinic, just off Dover Street in the Carys Bannister Building.

Sexual health

For details on your nearest sexual health clinics, as well as advice and guides on your sexual health, visit the student support site.

Student Advice in the Students' Union also offers guidance and support. You can go in person or email advice.su@manchester.ac.uk. They can also provide free contraception like condoms and femidoms.

If you need further advice on sexual health and wish to speak to a professional, you can contact the Hathersage Centre which is close to the University campus at +44 (0)161 701 1555. They're open Monday to Friday, 8 to 10.30am.

Alternatively, you can find out more about contraception and sexual health services in Manchester at Fresh4Manchester.
