How to pay

You can pay for your accommodation in instalments via Direct Debit or in full.

Paying in instalments

To spread the cost of your licence fees, you can pay in instalments via Direct Debit.  You (or the person paying on your behalf) will need a UK bank account to set up the payments.  The dates for 2023/24 are:

  • 20 October 2023
  • 19 January 2024
  • 19 April 2024

The dates for 2024/25 are:

  • 28 October 2024
  • 20 January 2025
  • 30 April 2025

The £400 Advanced Licence Fee you paid at the time of acceptance of the agreement will automatically be taken off your first instalment.

Notes:

  • Payment dates do not equate to periods of occupancy so please do not assume that if you have paid the first and second instalments you have paid for the period of occupancy up to 18th April.
  • Prices for each academic year typically increase on those of the previous year and the increase is publicised by April of the year of entry.

Paying in full

If you don’t want to pay in instalments, then you can pay in full before the first due date. Find more information on our making a payment page.

Payments will be processed on the date in your confirmation letter.

The account holder will be contacted if the Direct Debit is returned unpaid. We require ten working days’ notice to amend or cancel a payment.

How do I set up my Direct Debit?

Your Direct Debit can be set up online after accepting your licence agreement.

For those students wishing to set up a Direct Debit at a later date, or make an amendment to an existing Direct Debit please complete a new Direct Debit Mandate Form and return it to the Income Office. Please note the office is open Mondays & Tuesdays 10am-3pm.

Alternatively you can post the new mandate form to the following address:

Income Office Room G.003

University Of Manchester

John Owens Building

Oxford Road

Manchester

M13 9PL

You'll need to allow ten working days for any changes to be put in place. Unpaid Direct Debits may incur a default levy of 3% over the Bank of England base rate where the debt remains outstanding for more than 14 days.

If you are struggling to pay your accommodation please read our guidance on the cost of living and where to find help.

How do I change my details?

What extras do I have to pay for?

You won't need to find extra money for your utility bills, they're included in your hall fees (see payment plans below for your individual hall fees). Personal possessions insurance is also included. You will need to pay for laundry facilities at the time of use and if you are in self-catered accommodation you will need to pay for your food. Those living in catered accommodation have their meals included.  Catering is not provided during the Christmas and Easter vacations; however, to keep things simple, the catering cost is spread out over the full duration of the agreement. If you live in self-catered accommodation and you would like to eat in catered halls then you  can either 'pay as you go' or 'pay termly' or for a 'full year'.

What else can you tell me about accommodation fees?

Each year we assess the local market to ensure we are providing a range of affordable housing options for our students. In addition to not having utility bills (see above), we can say that unlike accommodation in the private sector, we are able to offer shorter contract lengths than 52 weeks. Any student experiencing financial hardship can apply for our Living Cost Support Fund, an institutional means-tested non-repayable bursary.

What do I do if I have a payment query?

Unfortunately the Accommodation Office cannot deal with payment enquiries.  If you have a payment enquiry you should contact the University's Finance Team who have advised the following information:

Price comparison data

The below links provide PDFs which list Postgraduate (PG) and Undergraduate (UG) halls in alphabetical order showing:

  • the types of rooms on offer
  • the length of the licence agreement (typically 40, 41, 42, 50 or 51 weeks)
  • the total cost for 2023/24 and 2024/25

While the prices are fixed for 2023/24 and 2024/25, we may need to change the use of particular halls, for example changing one from PG to UG, or other changes as required.
